Healthy Snacks for the Brain

Sunflower seeds, sesame seeds and squash seeds are a great snack with healthy fats, protein, fiber and minerals. These seeds contain a high level of polyunsaturated oils and magnesium which are very important to the health of our brains.

The sunflower seed is the fruit of the sunflower. These seeds are commonly eaten as a healthy snack and are also sold as food for pets and wild birds. The oil of the sunflower seeds may be used for cooking or may be processed into margarines. Aside from being a good source of calories the minerals found in these seeds are great for lowering the cholesterol level of our bodies.

Sesame seeds are small, thin, tear-shaped seeds with a nutty flavor and are rich in manganese, copper and calcium. The seeds and the oil have a high antioxidant content. The minerals found in the seeds can help reduce our blood cholesterol level.

Squash seeds are a good source of zinc; a mineral that aids in the healing process, and magnesium. These seeds are very nourishing and energizing. In the Philippines, these seeds are dried and is a very popular snack. They are highly nutritious and the minerals found in these seeds can help improve vision. Like the sesame seeds and sunflower seeds, squash seeds also contain antioxidants and saturated fats.

Three to four tablespoons of any of these healthy seeds are enough for our brain's daily needs.
