RT|WW - Plantain

Wordless Wednesday

This type of banana is often used in cooking. Although they can be eaten like our usual bananas, the meat is tougher and less sweet. The fruits in the picture are about 12 to 15 inches long.

I must admit that although I have often been curious as to what plantain tastes like (I always thought it must be cooked) - I have never tried any. I think the reason for not being adventurous is that I really do not like bananas cooked - I love them raw and I especially love the flavour of Winward Island bananas which it is claimed are the Rolls Royce of bananas. Next favourites are any others from the West Indies which are always rich in flavour - many are extra creamy and almost taste like milky rice pudding.

Still puzzling over plantains though ....

I LOVE Plantains... mmmmmm staple in our country... fried, boiled, grilled, baked.. you NAME it... mmmmm.. but I've never had them raw... I think it'd be too starchy for me... hehehehe

I have never had these, just the regular banana and I love those. I must give them a try sometime.

Are you certain they don't have to be cooked? Somebody once told me thay are "poison" raw... By the way, do you have any good plantain recipes?

We ate these when I was a very young child. We used to fry them. Not one of my favorites as I recall.
