Grapefruit Alert

I recently read an article about the yummy grapefruit being linked to cancer. I read that grapefruit contains chemical compounds [furanocoumaris] that may inhibit the way estrogen is metabolized, leading to a higher concentration of this hormone in the body. Thus, increasing the risk factor for breast cancer.

Women who ate half of a grapefruit every other day had a 30% increased incidence of breast cancer compared with women who didn't eat this fruit. [British Journal of Cancer]

Although researchers are still not yet sure if the same goes with premenopausal women, postmenopausal women who consume the fruit regularly should consider switching to other fruits. Experts recommend consuming 5 servings of a variety of fruits and veggies daily to limit exposure to potentially harmful substances from any single food.

I love the fruit but back here, grapefruits are being imported from other countries and they're not always available. This is good news for me because if this fruit is always available here, I am so sure I'll be eating it every day.

That is very interesting.

So many people (including my sister) ate half a grapefruit every day for a long time. I'm thankful that I was never keen on it ;O)

I love grapefruit. When I was carrying my first child, I would eat 3 at a time. It seems every time I turn around they are finding something that I love causes cancer. Oh well, I will try to stay fit and healthy so the cancer bug will stay away!!

I'm beginning to wonder if there is really anything that does not cause cancer or raise the risks of getting it. I don't like grapefruit but I do remember my grandparents eating it all the time while I was growing up.

Very informative post you got here. I love reading information regarding cancer. 4 years ago, my Dad died of Lung Cancer. Since then I've been very cautious of what to eat.

Grapefruit is an excellent source phytochemicals. :)

This is very bothersome as I love grapefruit juice and drink it every morning. I read some time back that grapefruit juice might increase the effects of some medications and doctors warned patients not to take it with certain medications. I asked my doctor and he said it wasn't a problem with the meds I was taking. I intend to look into this as I consume a lot of it.

I guess a healthy food isn't always healthy for everyone. For instance, I we know that carrot juice is good for us, but i read that drinking more than 1 pint per day would harm our liver. I think it's okay for us to eat the healthy foods provided we eat it in moderation and in a balanced way.

Wow. I am suddenly VERY glad I never liked grapefruit!

Oh well, I suppose for me it doesn't really matter. I've already had to give up my delicious grapefruit because it can't be consumed in combination with medication that I take. In fact, anyone who takes a prescription medication should check at their doctor or pharmacy about eating grapefruit.
It tastes so good too! What a shame...

I read about grapefruit and saw something on television about it last year and I must admit (especially as it affects women) it has put me off eating it. The other annoying thing about avoiding it is the fact that it is an excellent and quite cheap way of curing and preventing cystitus.

Aside from breast cancer, you may wanna take a look at this Medscape article about Grapefruit Juice

Weird. Alam mo ba tita, eating grapefruit is one of the fastest ways to lose weight. I read that in Reader's Digest eh. Sabi this is included in the meals of patients who will undergo bypass surgery, para mabilis mawala yung unwanted fats.

Hay, ang mundo kasi magulo! Hehehe... buti na lang di ako mahilig dyan :)

Happy weekend, tita! I linked pala your 4 blogs sa Sasha's Corner ko :)

i love grapefruit too.. maybe we just need to go in moderation for everything we eat.. cos life is short.. it'd be torturous to avoid so many things now.. all our food are either artificial or genetic altered now..

Ack! I loathe grapefruit! Now even more reason to hate it! lol!! Everything nowadays causes cancer though, ya know? I guess everything in moderation is the key...

Ok. I officially give up and am going back to eating nothing but fast food and chocolate. First it was eat alot of soy and then don't eat it, it causes alzheimers. Then orange juice. Drink it everyday then don't drink it because it has too much sugar. Oh and the whole alcohol thing. Wine is beneficial, then I read that any amount of alcohol was bad for women. So much for health science. I am gonna go eat a snickers.

I'm not a woman, but it seems like there are less and less foods that are truly healthy.
