When it's losing shine...

Do you ever wonder why our hair is losing luster over time? As we age, our scalp gets drier because our skin produces fewer ceramides, the one which gives moisture to the scalp. The oil gland activity also diminishes resulting to dull and dry hair. Add to that the frequent use of damaging hair dyes which further exacerbates the dryness and lack of shine. To make sure your crowning glory looks and feels touchable, follow these simple steps:

1.) Use a conditioner every time you wash. It can leave your hair looking limp but if you apply it only from midway up the hair to the ends to avoid the roots, you can preserve the volume. Regular use of conditioner cuts down on friction, thus avoiding breakage.

2.) Do a cold rinse at the end of your shower or blast your hair with cool air once you're through blow-drying. Doing so helps seal the cuticle so it lies flat and stays shiny.

3.) Make sure you protect your hair with leave-on heat protection when using a blow dryer, curling iron or straightener. These lotions or sprays go on before styling to form a barrier between your hair and the hot appliance, to avoid hair damage.

4.) When brushing, choose a brush with lots of tightly packed bristles to really smooth hair. Hair experts recommend boar or sable bristles for the strands and a boar-plastic mix for medium to thick hair.

5.) Consider a gloss treatment after a color service.

Hey Liza,

Now this is a hot tip!! I love hair tips!! Thanks :D!

I have a request though: if you ever find a tip on how to care for hair brushes; would you please either post it or let me know about it? I am asking this because, I keep my brushes away from the air (so it won't get any dust) but somehow it always gets these odd particles that get on my nerves (I spend hours cleaning my brushes)...I don't know if it is either from the material or what *nodding*.

Anyway, Thank you for this hair advice! Extremely useful!

I gather you had a pleasant weekend :D! I had one too.

Wishing you a fantastic week, dear!

Cheers

Hi Liza,
i can't think of a better person to ask this question. As I am now over 50 and have gone through menopause I am starting to experience a problem with hair loss.

I'm not going bald or anything. But, when I shampoo and brush my hair now, more and more each time more hair is coming out than when I was younger.

Do you know anyway to help in slowing this process down?

It has been found that a dash of lime juice in the final rinse water makes hair very shiny as it smooths down and seals the hair making it reflect the light. I also often use olive oil gently massaged through the length of the hair including the scalp and this is amazing - it also appears to make the hair grow quite rapidly.

Great tips. And it really shows why our hair gets so dry. All the hair dyes, hot showers, frequently washing, straightening, and blow drying.. That's what makes it really dry. Just avoid those things, and plait long hair when you go to sleep.
A little bit sesame oil rubbed on your hands and then smoothed into your hair will help keep your hair nice.
