Healthy Snacks for the Brain

Sunflower seeds, sesame seeds and squash seeds are a great snack with healthy fats, protein, fiber and minerals. These seeds contain a high level of polyunsaturated oils and magnesium which are very important to the health of our brains.

The sunflower seed is the fruit of the sunflower. These seeds are commonly eaten as a healthy snack and are also sold as food for pets and wild birds. The oil of the sunflower seeds may be used for cooking or may be processed into margarines. Aside from being a good source of calories the minerals found in these seeds are great for lowering the cholesterol level of our bodies.

Sesame seeds are small, thin, tear-shaped seeds with a nutty flavor and are rich in manganese, copper and calcium. The seeds and the oil have a high antioxidant content. The minerals found in the seeds can help reduce our blood cholesterol level.

Squash seeds are a good source of zinc; a mineral that aids in the healing process, and magnesium. These seeds are very nourishing and energizing. In the Philippines, these seeds are dried and is a very popular snack. They are highly nutritious and the minerals found in these seeds can help improve vision. Like the sesame seeds and sunflower seeds, squash seeds also contain antioxidants and saturated fats.

Three to four tablespoons of any of these healthy seeds are enough for our brain's daily needs.

Weekend Snapshot - #11

As the author says, everybody loves weekend, it is the time for leisure, recreation and other religious activities. And when everyone is having a grand time, you want to capture it and share it with others. That’s why Weekend Snapshot is here for you. Come and join the fun here.

Weekend was spent at home so I was not able to take photos but mom made this very delicious fresh spring rolls for dinner. The fresh spring rolls or the lumpiang sariwa in Filipino consist of 'ubod' (heart of the coconut), carrots, chick peas and sweet potatoes and topped with a special sauce.

Home of the Kiwis, Land of the Sheeps

Back in 1997 I tried out for the Auckland New Zealand Asian Intercity Bowling Tournament. I joined the eliminations not only because I so love bowling but because I've heard so much about New Zealand and wanted to see the country. I finished fifth and didn't make it to New Zealand because I was only a reserve and only the top 4 went.

Now, I don't have to try out for those bowling tournaments to visit New Zealand. With I can even bring the whole family for a grand vacation. They offer last minute and discount accommodations through out the country. We can stop by Auckland and explore the biggest Polynesian city in the world and stay at affordable villas. Then we can hop to Wellington, New Zealand's capital and enjoy the spectacular shimmering cityscape and stay at cheap hotels with first class accommodations. Christchurch should not be left out because it is the most attractive city in New Zealand. It is centered around an impressive neo-gothic Anglican Cathedral located at the heart of the city in Cathedral square. I'm sure the kids will be very excited to visit these fascinating places and learn about their culture.

If you're also planning for a vacation for the whole family, visit the web site and check out their special discounted offers.

Love, Romance and Breaking Up

How do you help your best friend who has just gone through a break-up? Would you encourage her to go out on a date immediately to help her get over it and tell her it was a good riddance? Or would you ask her to go out with you on a drinking spree to help her forget about it? If you don't know what to do, consider your problem solved.

I stumbled upon a web site on romance, love, dating and relationships. But please don't get me wrong. I am not implying that you should advice your friend to look for a date quickly after the breakup. The web site has very interesting romance articles and offers a lot of tips on romantic ideas, how to help a friend after a breakup, dating tips for men and women , relationship articles and even teach you how to write love letters. No need to fret, visit the web site and get great information and wonderful ideas on how to help your friend.

How to Drive Mosquitoes Away

I got this from my email and I feel I have to share this to all of you because this may save your life.

Here's a tip that was given at a recent gardening forum.

1. Put some water in a a white dinner plate (I suppose a small saucer will do).
2. Add some drops of Lemon Scented dish washing liquid.
3. Set the dish on your porch, patio, picnic table, park bench or other outdoor area.

Not sure what attracts them, the lemon scent or the white plate.

BUT ... mosquitoes flock to it, and drop dead shortly after drinking the Lemon Fresh dishwashing liquid & water mixture, and usually within about 10 feet of the plate.

TRY IT --- it works just super!
It may seem trivial, but it may also help to control mosquitoes around your home, (especially in areas where the dengue and malaria carrying mosquitoes are reaching epidemic proportions) .

To anyone who likes sitting out in the evening, or when you're having a cook out, this is safer than mosquito coils - no offensive odor and harmful fumes, no risk of fire.

The House of your Dreams

Owning a dream house is just what most of us dream of. And if you're planning on buying your dream house, the first question that comes to mind is how much for a downpayment? Most lenders offer 20% down payments on real estate, but this is often out of reach for new home buyers. Let Freethedrones help you handle this problem. Their forums cover all aspects of finance and you can ask any questions and advice on your financial future and investment. Check the Free The Drones Blog and get tips and guidelines on choosing the best personal finance for your dream house.

A Daily Doze of Vitamin C

In my house, I see to it that I always have a stock of Vitamin C. I make sure that my kids take 500 mg everyday and 1000 mg for me and my hubby. Vitamin C not only keeps our body healthy but it strengthens our immune system as well to help us fight diseases. But that's not the only benefit we get from taking Vitamin C. I read in one article that women who took Vitamin C for 10 years or more are less prone to having cataract ( a clouding of the lens of the eye or its surrounding transparent membrane that obstructs the passage of light).

Many experts believe that taking 1000 mg of Vitamin C everyday is safe and effective. I remember how my mom used to remind us when we were younger to take it everyday, now I'm the one telling this to my kids.

5 Simple Ways to Sleeping Soundly at Night

Most women suffered from difficulties in sleeping at some point in their lives. Others spend hours concentrating or turning from one side to the other until they fall asleep. Here are some simple patters to help you sleep soundly at night.

  1. Regular exercise. Simply increasing your level of activity at night can help you fall asleep easily.
  2. Avoid coffee in the afternoon. Aside from coffee, you may also limit your tea and soda intake because these beverages contain caffeine and will keep you awake at night.
  3. Lie down when you're already tired. Avoid spending long hours in bed staring at the ceiling and worrying when you will fall asleep. Should that be the case, get up and do something that can help you relax, then go back to bed when you're ready to sleep.
  4. Avoid changing your sleeping schedule. Sleeping late on weekends because there's no work the next day can possibly trigger circadian rhythm which will break your regular sleeping time.
  5. Consider Melatonin. A hormone is a natural sleep aid and studies prove that this is an aid to people who suffer from insomnia. But it is best to consult your doctor for the right dosage.
My cousin suffered from insomnia for years and these simple sleep aids helped a lot to get back to her normal sleeping time.

Insomnia is a sleeping disorder characterized by persistent difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep despite the opportunity. It is typically followed by functional impairment while awake. Insomniacs have been known to complain about being unable to close their eyes or "rest their mind" for more than a few minutes at a time. Both organic and non-organic insomnia constitute a sleep disorder. *borrowed from Wikipeda

Circadian rhythm is a roughly-24-hour cycle in the physiological processes of living beings, including plants, animals, fungi and cyanobacteria. *also borrowed from Wikipeda

My Blog is PR4

Woohoo! I can not believe my eyes when I checked my page ranking yesterday. But yesterday was really unbelievable I got not just 1 but 4! I started blogging 3 months ago and I have to admit I really worked hard to get a google ranking. Whew! Hard work finally paid off, and boy I am so glad.

But this won't stop here, I would definitely work better and continue to make good posts. To all my blogger friends and visitors, THANK YOU so much for helping me get a PR4. I owe this lot to you, should you need my help, please feel free to ask me.

What kind of soul are you?

I got another interesting tag from Jenny and Ellen. The tag is about what kind of a soul am I, I took the quiz and the result showed the real me, here it goes...

You Are a Peacemaker Soul

You strive to please others and compromise anyway you can.
War or conflict bothers you, and you would do anything to keep the peace.
You are a good mediator and a true negotiator.
Sometimes you do too much, trying so hard to make people happy.

While you keep the peace, you tend to be secretly judgmental.
You lose respect for people who don't like to both give and take.
On the flip side, you've got a great sense of humor and wit.
You're always diplomatic and able to give good advice.

Souls you are most compatible with: Warrior Soul, Hunter Soul and Visionary Soul
What Kind of Soul Are You?

The Black Nazarene in Quiapo

The feast of the Black Nazarene is held every 9th of January. The original image remains inside the Basilica of Quiapo while the replica is being processioned around the city of Manila. Hundreds of thousands of devotees gather at the basilica on the eve of the feast day. Many of them come from the different provinces.

The image, which originally came from Mexico is believed to be miraculous and cures diseases. My mom once told me a story about her friend's ailing mother. Upon the request the friend's family, the hand of the original Black Nazarene was flown to their province. His mother held the hand of the image and prayed. The next day, his mom was able to get up. It appeared as though she did not get sick. The hand of the miraculous image was returned to the basilica the next morning.

A large percentage of Filipinos are devoted catholics and truly believe in the healing power of the Black Nazarene. Tomorrow, January 9, 2008 the bare-footed devotees wearing maroon will once again gather outside the basilica of Quiapo, hoping to get close and kiss and touch the image and perhaps receive a miracle.

Will You Keep Your New Year's Resolution?

Happy New Year is pronounced around the world.... This time of year many people make “New Year’s Resolutions.” Resolutions are set in one day, but succeeded with a hundred tiny steps that happen throughout the year. New Year's resolutions should be nothing more than a starting point... New Year's resolutions can be hard to maintain. Plausibly, start off pretty good at the beginning of January, but by the time rolls all over, we find making excuses not to go or do it... LOL!

You Will Keep Your New Year's Resolution

You planning on making a resolution that's smart, attainable, and perfect for where your life is.
Will You Keep Your New Year's Resolution?

This tag came from Pretty Life Online, JulianaRW and Crystal.

*Start Copy Here*

When it comes to New Year’s Resolutions we seem to fall into four categories:

1) quite serious about them,
2) be flippant about them,
3) do it because we feel pressured to, or
4) do not do them. So, the purpose of this little game is to let us know which category you are in.

Copy from "*Start Copy Here*" through "*End Copy Here*" and post it. Before "*End Copy Here*" tell us who you are, your site(s) (with link) and your New Year’s Resolution, or not.

Then tag as many others as you like, from one to your entire blogroll, your choice.

If you like, create an intro paragraph to your post that also acknowledges who tagged you.

Juliana – Juliana's Site - My New Year's resolutions are looking for a part time job, keep blogging, and learn to cook and bake.

Michelle - Rusin Roundup - 1. Learn to be happier and accept myself for who I am, 2. Is to lose about 25 lbs., and 3. Is to stop smoking.

Karen - Grow Rich Along With Me - My resolution for next year is to achieve $3K per month passive income by the end of 2008.

Mel - Attitude, the Ultimate Power & Complain Complain Complain - “I don’t need no stinking resolutions.” I never hold to them anyway so why frustrate myself by starting them now.

Sandee - Comedy Plus - I don't need no stinking resolutions either. Years and years ago I did them because everyone else did, but not once did I follow through. Why set yourself up for failure?

Lynda - lynda's loft - My resolution is to see resolve to that which needs resolution. Like Mel and Sandee, I feel that resolutions give us more stress, however, being a person who sets goals each year, isn't that the same thing as a resolution??? Goals vs. resolutions? Goals are more general and allow for more time to complete them, a resolution requires a mind-set and immediate action, which is not always feasible... Well, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it...

Amelia - Amel's Realm - This is a list of my New Year's Resolution:
1. Health: Continue exercising twice a week, eat enough veggies and fruit, have enough rest, take vitamin C regularly and women's multivitamin during my period.
2. Spiritual: Improve my Daily Bread reading routine and my prayer life and learn more from God's Word.
3. Financial: Continue to make money online (my goal is getting €100 per month at least), be more creative in writing posts, and save most of the money.
4. General Life: Continue to learn Finnish AND practice it as best and often as I can, try out more baking and cooking recipes, continue to maintain and share positive thoughts, continue to learn to control my thoughts, continue to learn to catch myself before I start complaining and count my blessings instead, continue to stop and cherish all the little moments in life that oftentimes go unnoticed, and continue to feed my inner child and last but not least, continue to ENJOY my life thoroughly.

Max - MAX - My New Year's resolutions are to dedicate more time to my friends; to finally be able to read "Der Spiegel" in German; to be calm when organizing my marriage; to go one last time to my favourite club and dance the night away; and continue to be happy!

Eric - Speedcat Hollydale - I love chicken. Problem is that I really never get to have enough chicken! My New Year's resolution is to enact "Chicken Tuesday". On this day I will eat only chicken, blog about chicken, and promote chickens all over the world. (hormone free) Join me, won't you?

Marzie - Mariuca & Mariuca's Perfume Gallery - My resolution for 2008 is to enjoy a healthier lifestyle and to expand my Perfume Collection.

Sindi- Life Is A Roller Coaster - My resolution is to complain less, pray more and be a little more thankful for what I have.

Judy - Sugar Queen's Dream - My New Year's resolution is:To take better care of my health. To eat better, well at least 3 meals a day, I'm lucky these days if I stop for one meal a day....To help make the world a better place to live, I love the human race, but think there’s always room for change. To be generous until it hurts. To live each day as if it's my last.To make a book of our personal family recipes and traditions for each of my 3 my children, so that the traditions and family cooking can be passed on in my family line long after I'm gone and finally.......To help more with the local Human society, Animals like little kids can not fend for themselves so it's up to each of us to take care of our pets and to step in and care for all animals.....I hope that through me I can encourage my Children to be better adults and in turn to raise the Children they have or will have, to be good people with good, sound & solid values.... Peace!

Adrian - First Time Dad - My New Year’s Resolution for 2008 is to be a better father…now I don’t usually make New Year's resolutions because I never keep them but this one I better keep! Happy New Year to one and all!

Colin - Life - New Years Resolution? No way...Better to achieve more throughout the year rather than pander to the whims of a one day 'wishful thought'

Mauro - 1 Million Love Messages - My resolution for next year are:
1. Change my job (maybe work online). I'm really unhappy in the actual one.
2. Dedicate more time to my family and girlfriend... maybe start to get ready for our wedding :-) 3. Work hard in 1 Million Love Messages and reach 2500 Love messages (or more) in the end of 2008.

MidgetManOfSteel - Mental Poo - To get out of dealing with people who I have no desire in helping at the job I’m doing…catch the eye of someone who can see that I can write and be funny…and get my own ticket to happiness from my humor….and a Ferrari. While I’m doing this, I resolve to get a Ferrari.

Stacy - My Thoughts - My New Year’s Resolution for 2008 - Is to be more understanding to my children and to other people, Not to curse at others while I am driving, try to eat right and exercise, try to volunteer in my community, and to believe more in my spiritual side.

Jason - & - Although, I normally don't do New Year's Resolutions (because I find it as an excuse to actually do something I should've already been doing), this year I will plan on giving back to the blogging community, especially my audience. I'm not sure how I will do it yet, but I definitely will.

Kesa - Little Aussie Cynic - My New Years Resolution is the standard..... to finally get off the smokes and to loose 8kg.... both which are possible just difficult.....Happy New Year to you and yours….Aussie

Ann - A Nice Place in the Sun - "To let the rest of my life begin as soon as possible."

Liza of moms..... check nyo| A Simple Life - I don't usually make a New Year's resolution because I can't keep them, lol. But this year is an exception... my goal is to lose 20 lbs (he-he). Yesterday, I started working out and I plan to do it everyday. I know I can do it, slowly but surely ;). Wish me luck guys, hehe.

I'm passing this tag to Fei, Era and Melanie and Max.
